Meet the Board

John KarlJohn Karl – Friends of the Library President-retired, history teacher Bethlehem High School; former president of Home Furnishing Program,  president Friends of SCPL 2003-07; trustee Library Board 2008-11. Favorite things: woodworking, model trains, reading.

Fred Eddy- 1st VP,  -Whitney Book Corner volunteer, Book Sale Committee ; retired GE Global Research – computer scientist and co-author of a software design book. Favorite things: travel, reading about global events, business and technology and keeping up-to-date with our three sons.

ellieEllie Rowland -2nd VP -Ellie very much enjoys being the volunteer coordinator for the Whitney Book Corner, a job she has held since the store opened in May, 2002. She has previously served on the Friends Board and co-chaired the book sales with Virginia Thompson for 10 1/2 years. She also serves in the community as a volunteer at the SICM food pantry, a member of SICM steering committee, an ordained elder and deacon in the Presbyterian church, and an active member of the American Association of University Women. She enjoys attending UCALL classes, reading, travel, gardening and biking.

virkler photo 2 Nancy Virkler – Treasurer, book sorter, book sale volunteer. Retired in 2008 after 35 years in banking industry. Fun facts/favorite things – I have an extraordinary interest in Michelangelo ever since seeing the Pieta in 1964. Love crafts and hiking – I’m an Adirondack Mt. 46er!

Rita Moore, Membership Co-Chair -  update membership records, assist with renewal process, promote membership in the Friends. Retired Schenectady City School District library teacher.  Fun facts/favorite things – gardening and making a variety of unique home made jams like blueberry lime, cranberry pear and apple pie jam that really tastes like apple pie. I have an old family recipe for hot pepper relish.

Chris Witkowski,  Publicity, Newsletter Editor, Membership Committee, Webmaster. Retired New York State space planner and project manager. Fun facts/favorite things – grew up in a household that received five newspapers a day-no wonder I love words! Favorite thing -laying on my antique glider on a warm summer day devouring a book.

Gene RowlandGene Rowland is a Director of the Friends of SCPL, having served on the Board for several years. He coordinates the Monday Noon programs, and is a frequent reviewer for Books Sandwiched In. He also volunteers at the Whitney Book Corner and the library book sales. Gene is retired from GE Global Research where he worked as a Project Manager on a variety of R&D projects. He is a graduate of Penn State University.

Tricia Margas- Board Director, retired as Housing Director at the YWCA, Volunteer at the Whitney Book Corner.  Fun fact -  I love old cemeteries.
