The Military Academy at West Point, New York.


Join the Friends of the Library on Thursday, May 12, as we visit The US Military Academy at West Point and the Thayer Hotel.

The price of the trip is $85 for Friends members and $95 for non-members. This price includes transportation, admissions, tour, a buffet luncheon and all gratuities. Make checks payable to Friends of the SCPL.


We will be leaving at 8:00 AM from the Schenectady Home Depot parking lot. Approximate return time is  6:00 PM.


Upon arrival at the West Point Visitors Center, a step-on guide will join us for a combined bus and walking tour of the US Military Academy at West Point.  We will hear the story of its role in the Revolution and its famous history along with stories about graduates who have shaped our nation.  The tour will bring the Long Gray Line to the present as you learn of the cadet experience and West Point’s continuing role in training the leaders of tomorrow.  This tour of West Point makes stops at the Cadet Chapel, the Plain (the Cadet academic area), the West Point cemetery and Trophy Point with the million dollar view overlooking the Hudson River.

After our tour we will have lunch at the historic Thayer Hotel on the grounds of West Point. Steeped in history and surrounded by the imposing granite halls of the U.S. Military Academy, the Thayer Hotel at West Point is unlike any other. Visited by past U.S. Presidents, international leaders and celebrities alike, the Thayer Hotel is a national historic treasure.  We will enjoy an extensive buffet lunch prepared by their award winning staff trained at the Culinary Institute of America.

Following lunch we will visit the West Point Museum, our oldest Federal Museum whose origins can be traced back to the American Revolution. The galleries showcase the history of the U.S. Army, warfare and weapons. It contains the largest diversified collection of military artifacts in the United States ranging from George Washington’s pistols to a World War I tank to muddy fatigues worn in Viet Nam.

The West Point Gift Shop is located next to the museum.


***PLEASE NOTE:  West Point requires a photo ID (passport or driver’s license).  We must let them know in advance your birthdate, the form of ID you will bring and the ID number.***

We will be following CDC guidelines as well as Wade Tours and West Point protocols concerning masks.  Currently masks are required on the bus, during the West Point tour and at the museum.  We may be given other guidance on the day of the trip but be prepared and bring a mask.

The tour will be held rain or shine.  We are hoping for shine but bring appropriate rain gear in the event of inclement weather.  You may also want to bring a bottle of water, sunglasses, etc.
