Meet the Board

 

Valerie Catlin, President. Valerie worked for the Mohawk Valley Library System for over 35 years and recently retired. She has worked for the Friends book sales for many years, and was Friends newsletter editor at one time; she served several previous terms on the Friends Board of Directors, and was president for two terms.
Tricia Margas, 1st Vice President, retired as Housing Director at the YWCA, Volunteer at the Whitney Book Corner.  Fun fact – I love old cemeteries.

Shawn Marie

Shawn Marie Schultz, 2nd Vice President, Head of On Line Books, Associate Director at Whitney Book Corner in charge of special events, book sale volunteer;  council member of Rotterdam Conservation Advisory Council and member of Friends of the Aquifer. Favorite things: riding motorcycles , computer games and shopping with my granddaughters.

virkler photo 2 Nancy Virkler – Treasurer, book sorter, book sale volunteer. Retired in 2008 after 35 years in banking industry. Fun facts/favorite things – I have an extraordinary interest in Michelangelo ever since seeing the Pieta in 1964. Love crafts and hiking – I’m an Adirondack Mt. 46er!

RRita Mooreita Moore, 50th Anniversary Chair , Board Director. Retired Schenectady City School District library teacher.  Fun facts/favorite things – gardening and making a variety of unique home made jams like blueberry lime, cranberry pear and apple pie jam that really tastes like apple pie. I have an old family recipe for hot pepper relish.

CharleneCharlene Roman, Manager of the Whitney Book Corner. Retired from retail management after 30+ years, including Bradlees, Barnes and Noble and Waldenbooks; substitute elementary school teacher. Favorite things: my granddaughter, who has Angelman Syndrome, working with the FAST organization to raise money for research and reading and music.

Madelyn ThorneMadelyn Thorne, Board Director, Secretary, RFID volunteer, Whitney Book Corner Volunteer and Book Sale Cashier and Clean-Up Drudge. Also on the Upper Union Street BID, Boards for The Umbrella of the Capital District and Habitat for Humanity. Member of the Tuesday night book club. Favorite things: reading, crossword puzzles and music.

Chris Witkowski,  Publicity Chair, Newsletter Editor, Membership Committee, Webmaster. Retired New York State space planner and project manager. Fun facts/favorite things – grew up in a household that received five newspapers a day-no wonder I love words! Favorite thing -laying on my antique glider on a warm summer day devouring a book.

Gene RowlandGene Rowland Gene coordinates the Monday Noon programs, and is a frequent reviewer for Books Sandwiched In. He also volunteers at the Whitney Book Corner and the library book sales. Gene is retired from GE Global Research where he worked as a Project Manager on a variety of R&D projects. He is a graduate of Penn State University.

Bob 2Bob Symons, Board Director, Book Sale Committee; semi-retired building contractor; past president/teacher at Adirondack Bible College; ordained elder in the Evangelical Wesleyan Church. Favorite things: books, gardening, hunting/fishing, woodworking, grandchildren.

 

 

Donna Fairlee, Board Director.  Donna is a native to Schenectady. She worked for the Schenectady County Public Library, the NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles and retired from the Schenectady City School District. For over 10 years Donna was organist at Stanford United Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church. Donna and Bill both enjoy working the Friends book sales and she has volunteered at the Whitney Book Corner for the past 2 years.

dingle 2Esther M. Swanker, Board Director- Esther has spent a great deal of her adult life in and around libraries, first as a school librarian in Burnt Hills. Following her retirement from state government she has served as president of the Board of Trustees of the Schenectady County Public Library, and a member of MVLS Board and the Foundation for MVLS Libraries.

 

IMG_0493Chris Makofski, Board Director Chris has lived in the Schenectady area for most of her life. Retired now, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and volunteering at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, the Zion Lutheran Church, the Central Park Rose Garden, Birthday Buddies, and at the Whitney Book Corner as a regular and a sub.

 

Dottie Potochnik, Board Director. Dottie retired from The Schenectady City  School District after 26 years as a classroom teacher.  Her retirement has   allowed time for extensive world travel, after which she says our National Parks are the destinations she loves the best.  She has been a volunteer for many years with the book sales, both with the preparation of children’s non-fiction for the sales and working at the sales. ” Our Friends of the Library is a great organization.”

FullSizeRenderBobbi Richardson, Board Director. A native of Michigan, I moved to Boston and then Schenectady.  I volunteer with the Master Gardeners, AAUW and the Whitney Book Corner.  As a retired teacher, I enjoy reading, gardening, photography and travel.  I love photographing the world.  Favorite activity:  sharing books with my grandchildren.
