THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE IN NEW YORK CITY
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
Join us for an exciting day in New York City as we travel to the Lower East Side to visit the Tenement Museum. While there, we will take two tours. One is a guided tour of two apartments in the tenement building and the other is a walking tour of the neighborhood called “Outside the Home” which will help us see the Lower East Side through the eyes of the immigrants who lived there for 150 years. Discover the towering Jarmulowsky Bank building, where immigrants deposited (and eventually lost) their life savings; the Daily Forward building, where socialists fought for worker rights; and PS 42, where generations of immigrants learned how to “be American” among other sites related to their everyday lives .The walking tour does not enter any buildings and is held rain or shine (we are hoping for shine but keep an eye on the weather reports). These tours include stairs and walking.
The price of the trip is $65 for Friends members and $75 for non-members. Checks should be made out to Friends of the SCPL. CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FORM
The Tenement Museum “tells the stories of immigrants who started their lives anew on Manhattan’s Lower East Side between the 19th and 21st centuries through the recreated apartment and businesses of real families in our two historic tenement buildings. Our tenements housed over 15,000 working class immigrants from over 20 nations while they served as residences.” https://www.tenement.org/about.html
Because of the timing of tours at the museum, we need to leave the Watt Street Home Depot Parking Lot in Schenectady promptly at 6:00am – yes, early but necessary! The Home Depot lot is located off the Crosstown behind Applebees. Use the lot furthest from the store.
The two tours will last from 10:00am to 1:00pm. After that, you will have time for lunch on your own and exploring the lower east side. You could take a different afternoon tour at the museum (additional cost), take short walks to Chinatown or Little Italy, or visit nearby museums, churches, parks and shops. There are also many dining options nearby.
We will leave NYC at 4:00pm and should be home by 8pm, dependent on traffic. We will make a short rest stop each way.
